We weren't sure if the roads would be open driving from Winthrop to Leavenworth as they had been closed just days before due to the massive fires plaguing the state of Washington. As it turned out, the roads were open although there were areas where traffic was limited to one lane due to workers trying to restore telephone poles and communications along the highway. We made it to Leavenworth which is famous for its Bavarian architechture and classic Octoberfest festivals. We stayed at Icicle River RV Resort just on the other side of town and had a great spot right on the Icicle River. We awoke the next morning to what I sleepily thought was snow at first (end of July) but turned out to be ashes from a stubborn forest fire nearby that wouldn't quit. The news said that there would be more road closures that day so we packed up in a hurry and beat feet out of town while we could :-)
